Vertebrae L1 is broken and instable. I got this diagnosis in the hospital of Nova Gorica, Slovenia, on April 16th 2017.
But I will tell you from the beginning. On Thursday night before Easter we headed to Slovenia to go kayaking on the Soca river. The vibe, the people, the weather - everything was great! We spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the river and I improved within every run. On Friday night we were invited to a slovenian guys’ home, cooked up a big dinner and had an awesome time above Bovec. The annual season opening party hosted by Prijon was on Saturday and the Easter weekend could not have been better. On Sunday afternoon Sven, Lars, Marine and I wanted to do another run and headed on the water. I enjoyed this paddle so much and got some helpful tips of Lars. A few meters just before the take-out, I didn’t focus on a very easy rapid and flipped. Before I was able to roll up, the current pushed me towards a boulder and I crashed into it with my back. That moment I knew that something was wrong, I pulled the spraydeck and Lars got me out of the water. With the help of the others, we got to the take out, the ambulance came shortly after and brought me to the hospital. Wet, without any documents and full of pain, they took a x-ray and told me the devastating diagnosis. The next days flew by, my day arrived from Munich and organized a return transport. Thursday morning I went into surgery at Sana-Klinik Solln and three vertebrae got stiffened (L2 to T12). When I look back at the pain I had during the accident, I sure wasn’t prepared prepared for what was expecting me. Two days post surgery I walked a my first steps, felt less pain and made some improvements. I’m scared of what the upcoming time holds for me. I will hopefully be going into rehab at Chiemsee within end of May and build up body strength again. The fixation will be taken out in October and then with a lot of hard exercise, I will finally get my normal life back. Until then there will be a lot of work, endurance, tears, many improvements, no ‚extreme‘ sport and obstacles on the way. What keeps me focused on this journey are two friends that have suffered similar injuries which are now kayaking again and found a way back into their active life. My goal is to be back in Soca valley on April 16th 2018 and start into a exciting and fulfilling kayaking season.
